What does it mean, in short?
On an iPhone with MDM, Settings, General, VPN & Device Management shows the management profile, and a supervised phone shows at the top of Settings that it is supervised and managed by an organization. A manually installed profile can be removed. Automated enrollment, tied to the phone’s serial number in the organization’s account, does not go away when the phone is erased.
How do you decide quickly?
- If the “Remote Management” screen with a company name appears during setup, the phone still belongs to that organization. Do not buy until it is officially released.
- If the seller offers an “MDM bypass”, the phone stays enrolled. The lock can return after an update or a restore.
- If the profile was installed manually, the seller removes it in Settings in front of you, and the management screen does not appear after a reset, the risk drops a lot.
What are the steps?
Step 1
Open Settings, General, VPN & Device Management
If a management profile with an organization’s name appears, the phone is under MDM. A personal iPhone usually has no profile here.
Step 2
Look at the top of Settings and in About
A supervised iPhone shows that it is supervised and managed by an organization. Supervision means broader control than a regular profile.
Step 3
Ask for a full reset before you pay
After erasing and setting it up, an automatically enrolled phone shows the “Remote Management” screen. It is the most reliable practical test.
Step 4
Check the MDM status by IMEI or serial
The report shows whether the serial number is enrolled in an organization’s management, before you travel to the seller.
What can go wrong if you skip the check?
- The organization can lock or erase the phone remotely at any time after you buy it.
- The phone may belong to a company, not to the seller, so buying it can become a legal problem.
- An “MDM bypass” hides the management screen, but the enrollment stays and can return after an iOS update.
When is the Codat report relevant?
- When you buy a cheap iPhone that may come from a company and want to know if it is still enrolled in its management.
- When the seller says “the MDM was removed” and you want independent confirmation before paying.
- When you check a MacBook or an iPad, where enrollment in a company’s management is just as common.
The Codat report supports your decision about the specific device that was checked. It does not support general claims about every phone of the same model, brand or category.
Limits of this guide
- A result describes the status seen in the checked source at the time of the query; the status can change later.
- A remote check does not replace a controlled reset, a hands-on test and checking the paperwork before you pay.
- The MDM status in the report reflects the serial number’s enrollment at the time of the lookup; a profile installed manually on the phone can only be checked in Settings.

Can MDM be removed from an iPhone?
A manually installed profile is removed in Settings. Automated enrollment through Apple Business Manager can only be removed by the organization that owns the phone, by releasing the serial number from its account.
Is MDM the same as iCloud Lock?
No. iCloud Lock (Activation Lock) ties the phone to a person’s Apple Account. MDM ties the phone to an organization’s management. A phone can have both.
Is a cheap iPhone with MDM worth buying?
Usually not. The low price reflects exactly the risk that the organization locks or claims the phone. Without an official release, you have no real control over it.
