What is FRP on Samsung (Factory Reset Protection)

A clear explanation of FRP (Factory Reset Protection) on Samsung, why it locks the phone after a reset and how to check the risk before buying a used Samsung.

Short answer

FRP (Factory Reset Protection) is the Android protection that, after an unauthorised reset, can ask for a previously synced Google account or the screen lock credentials. If the seller cannot show that the phone activates normally after a reset, do not buy it.

What does it mean, in short?

FRP is part of Android’s protection against using a device that was reset without permission. The exact behaviour depends on the Android version, the reset method and management policies. In protected scenarios, setup asks for an authentication method previously linked to the device.

How do you decide quickly?

  • If the seller says they no longer know the Google account password or that “it will be fine after the reset”, stop the deal, because that is exactly the situation in which FRP will lock the phone.
  • Test in person when you meet: ask the seller to open Settings and confirm there is no active Google account (Settings → Accounts), or to remove the account in front of you before the reset.
  • If the phone is already factory reset (welcome screen), ask the seller to set it up in front of you. If they cannot get past the Google activation screen, FRP is active.

What are the steps?

  1. Step 1

Ask for the IMEI and check it before you meet

Enter the IMEI on Codat.ro. Depending on the check you choose, the report can include relevant signals about the device, but it does not replace the hands-on test after a reset.

  2. Step 2

Check the active accounts on the phone when you meet

Go to Settings → Accounts and backup (the menu name can vary slightly between models). If there is an active Google account, ask the seller to remove it in front of you before any reset.

  3. Step 3

    Run a controlled factory reset

With the seller present, go to Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset. If after the reset the Google activation screen appears with a pre-filled account, FRP is active and the seller has to enter the password.

  4. Step 4

Confirm you can set up the phone with your own account

After a successful reset and entering the seller’s Google account (or a test account), you can reset again and set it up with your own account. Do not pay until you have confirmed you can get past FRP.

What can go wrong if you skip the check?

  • A phone locked by FRP cannot be set up normally without the authentication the system accepts.
  • Unofficial bypass methods can compromise security, data, software stability and proof of ownership.
  • A device that cannot be activated normally has severely reduced use and resale value.

When is the Codat report relevant?

  • When you want to confirm the FRP status before travelling to meet the seller.
  • When the phone is already reset and you want to know whether FRP could be an obstacle.
  • When you are buying from a seller who cannot show live that the phone works normally.

The Codat report supports your decision about the specific device that was checked. It does not support general claims about every phone of the same model, brand or category.

Limits of this guide

  • A result describes the status seen in the checked source at the time of the query; the status can change later.
  • A remote check does not replace a controlled reset, a hands-on test and checking the paperwork before you pay.
  • FRP behaviour can vary with the Android version, the reset method and the device’s management policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does FRP lock the phone even if I change the SIM?

Yes. FRP is not tied to the SIM or the carrier but to the Google account. Changing the SIM card does not turn FRP off. The lock appears after any factory reset, regardless of the SIM.

How do I turn off FRP before selling a Samsung?

Go to Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts → Google and remove the Google account before the reset. Alternatively, in Settings → General management → Reset, use the full reset option that asks you to confirm removing the account. If you reset with the Google account still active, FRP stays active on the phone.

Are FRP and Knox Lock the same thing?

No. FRP is Android’s protection after a reset, while Knox Guard is a Samsung management and locking solution for devices enrolled by organisations. They have to be assessed separately.

Can FRP be turned off without the Google account password?

Do not rely on a bypass. Use official account recovery or the manufacturer’s support, and have ready the proof of ownership required in your case.

How do I check if a Samsung has FRP active without resetting it?

By checking the IMEI on Codat.ro. The report can show signals related to FRP and other locks available for the device, but hands-on confirmation after a reset is still needed.
